Forge modpacks on your server
Most big Forge modpacks are on CurseForge or FTB. The panel installs the server version of the pack with the Forge build the pack was made for.
- Order a Forge server with at least 8 GB of RAM, or 12 GB for a pack of 300 mods or more.
- Open the Mods tab and go to CurseForge and FTB packs.
- Search the pack, choose the pack version and click Install this pack.
- Start the server. The first start of a big pack takes a few minutes.
- Send your players the pack name and version, so they install the same one.
Read install a modpack for packs that are not in the list.

Forge or NeoForge
NeoForge split off from Forge in 2023. Most new mods for 1.20.2 and later are made for NeoForge, while Forge holds the large number of packs on 1.20.1 and older.
| Minecraft version | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.4 | Forge | The packs of those versions are Forge packs |
| 1.20.1 | Forge | Most 1.20.1 packs still use Forge |
| 1.21.1 and newer | NeoForge | Big mods moved to NeoForge |
The pack page on CurseForge names the loader. More in Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, or see NeoForge server hosting.
RAM for a Forge server
A heavy Forge modpack needs about 6 GB before anyone joins, then about 1 GB per player. A light pack of around 50 mods starts at 4 GB and adds 1 GB for every 2 players.
| Forge server | Players online | RAM | Price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light pack, about 50 mods | Up to 4 | 6 GB | €4.80 |
| Medium pack, about 150 mods | Up to 6 | 8 GB | €6.40 |
| Heavy pack, 300 mods or more | Up to 6 | 12 GB | €9.60 |
| Heavy pack | Up to 10 | 16 GB | €12.80 |
Pre-generate the world after the install. A modded world that generates chunks while players explore is the most common cause of lag on a Forge server. See pre-generate your world.
When a Forge server crashes
Forge writes a crash report to the crash-reports folder. The console shows the error in plain language and names the mod that caused it when it can.
- A mod for the wrong Minecraft version or for Fabric instead of Forge
- A missing library mod that another mod depends on
- A client side mod, such as a minimap or shader mod, that does not belong on the server
- Too little RAM for the pack
Ask the AI Copilot why the server crashed: it reads the crash report and the log. More in Minecraft server keeps crashing.
