Who a vanilla server is for
- Friends playing survival who want the game as it is, with the newest release on day one
- Hardcore worlds that stay close to the single player rules; see make a hardcore Minecraft server
- Technical players who build farms and redstone that depend on exact vanilla behaviour
- New Minecraft versions: Paper and modded loaders follow later, vanilla is ready when Mojang releases
Want land claims, ranks or a shop? Those need plugins, so pick Paper server hosting. Paper keeps survival close to vanilla with a few fixes.
Change the vanilla game without mods
A vanilla server still has a lot of settings. They are all in the control panel.
| What | Where in the panel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Game rules | Console or Settings | keepInventory, playersSleepingPercentage |
| Difficulty, game mode, PvP | Settings, server.properties | difficulty=hard, pvp=false |
| Data packs | Files, world/datapacks | More armor trims, custom recipes |
| Resource pack | Settings, server.properties | A pack that players load when they join |
| World seed | Settings before the first start | A seed from a seed list |
Step by step: keep inventory and game rules, install data packs and change the seed.

RAM for a vanilla server
Vanilla is the lightest server type. It needs about 2 GB, then 1 GB for every 4 players at the normal view distance of 10 chunks.
| Vanilla server | Players online | RAM | Price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two or three friends | Up to 3 | 2 GB | €1.60 |
| Small group | Up to 8 | 4 GB | €3.20 |
| Bigger survival world | Up to 16 | 6 GB | €4.80 |
| Public vanilla server | Up to 24 | 8 GB | €6.40 |
Update a vanilla server to a new Minecraft version
- Make a backup in the Backups tab.
- Open Settings and set the Minecraft version to Latest or the release you want.
- Save and restart. The world is converted on the first start.
- Tell your players to start the game on the same version.
Going back to an older version needs the backup from before the update. See change Minecraft server version.

Questions about Vanilla Minecraft server hosting
Is a vanilla server the same as Realms?
Both run the normal game. A vanilla server here lets you choose the RAM, the version, the settings and the world files, and up to 15 staff accounts can manage it.
Can I add plugins to a vanilla server later?
Switch the software to Paper under Settings and keep the world. Paper loads plugins; vanilla does not.
Does a vanilla server run Minecraft 26.3?
Yes. Vanilla and Fabric are the two server types on the order form that offer 26.3.
Can Bedrock friends join a vanilla server?
Not directly. Bedrock players need Geyser, which runs on Paper. Order the Crossplay edition for a world that Java and Bedrock players share.
