Fix "Missing or unsupported mandatory dependencies" on a Minecraft server

A modded server that stops during startup with Missing or unsupported mandatory dependencies has nothing wrong with its world or its settings. Before NeoForge or Forge load a single mod, they check every mod's list of required mods against the mods folder, and they stop when something on a list is absent or has the wrong version.

The console names the missing mod and the versions it accepts. This guide shows where that line is, how to read the version range, and how to install the mod from the panel.

In short

"Missing or unsupported mandatory dependencies" means one of your mods needs another mod that is not on the server, or not in a version it accepts. The line under it names both: Mod ID: 'uranus', Requested by: 'iceandfire', Expected range: '[2.3.2,)', Actual version: '[MISSING]' means Ice and Fire needs Uranus 2.3.2 or newer. Install that mod for your loader and Minecraft version, then start the server again.

What the error looks like in the console

Open the Console tab after a failed start and look for this heading. The lines right under it are the ones that matter, one line per missing mod:

[main/ERROR] [net.neoforged.fml.loading.ModSorter/LOADING]: Missing or unsupported mandatory dependencies:
Mod ID: 'uranus', Requested by: 'iceandfire', Expected range: '[2.3.2,)', Actual version: '[MISSING]'

On Forge the heading starts with net.minecraftforge instead of net.neoforged; the rest is the same. A moment later the loader says it once more in plain words, Mod iceandfire requires uranus 2.3.2 or above, and the server stops.

Part of the lineWhat it tells you
Mod ID: 'uranus'The mod that is missing or has the wrong version
Requested by: 'iceandfire'The mod that needs it, here Ice and Fire
Expected range: '[2.3.2,)'The versions it accepts
Actual version: '[MISSING]'What the server has now. [MISSING] means it is not installed at all

Ten mods without their library give ten lines. Several of them can ask for the same mod ID, and you only install that one once.

How to read the Expected range

The range is written with brackets. A square bracket includes the version next to it, a round bracket leaves it out, and an empty side has no limit.

Expected rangeAcceptsSeen with
[2.3.2,)2.3.2 or any newer versionUranus for Ice and Fire
[0.8.8,0.8.8]Exactly 0.8.8 and nothing elseA mod built against one exact release of another
[9.3.14,9.4.0)9.3.14 or newer, but older than 9.4.0Add-ons for Pixelmon

In the plain words line, a range with an upper limit reads like Mod lowlustworldboss requires pixelmon 9.3.14 or above, and below 9.4.0.

When Actual version shows a number instead of [MISSING], the mod is there but outside the range. Replace that file with a version inside the range. Adding a second copy next to the old one gives you a different error on the next start.

Find the mod behind a mod ID

The loader writes mod IDs: the short, lower case names mods use internally. They often differ from the name on the download page. Some you will meet:

Mod IDSearch for
uranusUranus, the library Ice and Fire needs
kotlinforforgeKotlin for Forge, for mods written in Kotlin
moonlightMoonlight Lib, for Supplementaries and the other mods by its author
resourcefullibResourceful Lib
ftblibraryFTB Library, for FTB Quests, FTB Chunks and FTB Teams

If the name is not obvious, open the download page of the mod after Requested by. Its required mods are listed there, under Dependencies on Modrinth and under Relations on CurseForge.

Install the missing mod from the panel

  1. Open the Mods tab of your server.
  2. Under Verified Modrinth catalog, type the name of the missing mod in Search mods.
  3. Click Verify & install, and check that the version falls inside the Expected range.
  4. Start the server and read the Console again. A library can need a library of its own, so a second, shorter list sometimes follows. Repeat for each line.
  5. Give your players the same mod, or update the modpack they play with. A client without it cannot join.

A mod that is not in the catalog goes in through the Files tab: open the mods folder and use Upload, or From link for a direct download address. Pick the file for your loader and your Minecraft version.

You can also go the other way. If you do not need the mod after Requested by, find it with Filter installed mods and remove it; its missing library then no longer matters.

When the Mod ID is neoforge, forge or minecraft

Now and then the missing mod ID is the loader or the game itself. No extra mod fixes that: the mod was built for a newer loader or for another Minecraft version.

Mod ID in the lineWhat to do
neoforge or forgeUse a build of the mod made for your loader version, or move the server to a newer loader build
minecraftUse the build of the mod for your server's Minecraft version

Typical causes are a mod downloaded for 1.21.4 on a 1.21.1 server, or a mod made for NeoForge on a Forge server. Fabric, Forge or NeoForge explains which mods run on which loader.

Questions from Minecraft server owners

What does Missing or unsupported mandatory dependencies mean?

A mod on your server needs another mod that is missing, or installed in a version outside the range it accepts. The line under the heading names both mods.

What does [MISSING] mean as Actual version?

The required mod is not installed at all. Install it in a version inside the Expected range and start the server again.

What does a range like [2.3.2,) mean?

Version 2.3.2 or anything newer. A square bracket includes the version, a round bracket leaves it out, and an empty side has no limit.

Do players need the missing mod too?

Yes. Players need the same mods as the server, libraries included, or they are refused when they join.

Can I remove the mod that asks for it instead?

Yes. If you do not need the mod named after Requested by, removing it fixes the start as well. Check first that no other mod depends on it.

Does Fabric show the same error?

No. Fabric says Incompatible mods found and writes the fix in words, such as requires fabric-api, which is missing. The idea is the same: install what it names.
