Plugins and mods
Set up an economy and shops on your Minecraft server
Minecraft has no money of its own. On a Paper server, plugins add it: a balance per player, commands to pay each other, and shops where items are bought and sold.
This guide shows the usual setup with EssentialsX, how Vault connects the plugins, the choice between sign shops, chest shops and a server shop, and how to set prices so the economy stays useful after a few weeks.
In short
A Minecraft economy on Paper needs three parts: an economy plugin that stores money, such as EssentialsX, Vault or VaultUnlocked so other plugins can reach that money, and shop plugins that use it. Install EssentialsX and VaultUnlocked from the Plugins tab, restart, and players have /balance and /pay. Add a chest shop plugin for player shops and a menu shop for the server's own prices.
How a Minecraft server economy fits together
| Part | Job | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Economy plugin | Stores the balance of every player and handles payments | EssentialsX, or a standalone economy plugin |
| Vault bridge | Lets every other plugin read and change balances the same way | Vault, or VaultUnlocked |
| Shops | Buy and sell items for money | EssentialsX signs, QuickShop-Hikari, UltimateShop, DynamicShop |
| Money sources and sinks | Ways to earn and to spend | Selling items, jobs, land claims, ranks, teleport costs |
Only one plugin should store money. Shop, auction and job plugins then talk to it through Vault. Without the bridge, a shop plugin often refuses to start with a message that no economy was found.
Install EssentialsX and Vault from the Plugins tab
- Make sure the server runs Paper or Purpur.
- Open the Plugins tab and search the Plugin catalog for
EssentialsX. Install it. - Search for
VaultUnlockedand install it. It is a maintained version of Vault that plugins written for Vault can use. - Restart the server.
- Check the Console for a line from EssentialsX or Vault saying an economy was hooked or registered.
If you already set up EssentialsX for homes and warps, it only needs the bridge. Install plugins covers uploading a plugin that is not in the catalog.
Money commands: /balance, /pay and /eco
| Command | What it does | Permission |
|---|---|---|
/balance or /bal | Shows your money | essentials.balance |
/pay Sam 100 | Sends 100 to Sam | essentials.pay |
/baltop | The richest players | essentials.balancetop |
/eco give Sam 500 | Adds money to Sam; also take, set and reset | Staff only: essentials.eco |
/sell hand | Sells the item in your hand at the price in worth.yml | essentials.sell |
/worth | Shows what the item in your hand sells for | essentials.worth |
Give the player permissions to the default group with LuckPerms, for example lp group default permission set essentials.pay true. Keep essentials.eco for staff.
Economy settings in EssentialsX config.yml
starting-balanceis the money a new player starts with.currency-symbolis the sign shown before amounts.command-costsputs a price on commands, such as a cost for/home; a simple way to take money out of the economy.
Sign shops with EssentialsX
EssentialsX can turn signs into shops. The sign types are off by default; switch on the ones you want under enabledSigns in plugins/Essentials/config.yml, for example buy and sell, and run essentials reload.
| Line | Buy sign | Sell sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | [Buy] | [Sell] |
| 2 | Amount, such as 16 | Amount, such as 64 |
| 3 | Item, such as bread | Item, such as wheat |
| 4 | Price, such as $20 | Price, such as $8 |
These signs are the server's own shop: the server hands out and takes in the items, without a chest behind them. Only staff should be able to make them; that is the permission essentials.signs.create.buy, while players need essentials.signs.use.buy to use one.
Player chest shops
In a chest shop a player sells their own items from a chest. Buyers pay the owner, and stock runs out when the chest is empty. This is the most common shop on survival servers, because prices come from the players.
- Install QuickShop-Hikari from the Plugin catalog and restart.
- A player puts items in a chest, looks at it and follows the plugin's prompt to set a price.
- Other players click the chest and type how many they want to buy.
Chest shops work best together with land claims, so nobody can break into a shop. See stop griefing for claims and block logging.
A server shop with a menu
A server shop sells items at fixed prices from a menu, usually opened with /shop. It is useful for items players cannot farm themselves, or as a price floor for common items.
| Plugin in the catalog | Kind of shop |
|---|---|
| UltimateShop | Menu shop with buy and sell prices, limits and cooldowns that you set |
| DynamicShop | Prices move with supply and demand |
| Click Shop | Simple shop with your own items and prices |
| NexusAuctionHouse or CrazyAuctions | Auction house where players sell to each other |
Pick one menu shop. Two shops with different prices for the same item let players buy in one and sell in the other for profit.
Keep a Minecraft economy balanced
An economy goes wrong when money enters faster than it leaves. After a few weeks everyone is rich, prices mean nothing and the shop is empty. These rules keep it working:
- Sell prices below buy prices. If the server buys an item for 8 and sells it for 20, nobody can loop it for profit.
- Low prices for farmable items. Anything an automatic farm makes in thousands, such as cobblestone, sugar cane or rotten flesh, should sell for very little or not at all.
- Money sinks. Things that remove money: land claim blocks, ranks bought with game money,
command-costsfor teleports, repairs. - A small starting balance. Enough for a bed and some food, not enough to skip the early game.
- Watch `/baltop` every week. One player far above the rest often means a price that can be abused.
Change prices in small steps and tell players before you do. Lowering a sell price overnight feels like a punishment to players who built a farm for it.
Economy on modded and crossplay servers
Vault, EssentialsX and the shop plugins are Paper plugins. Fabric and Forge servers need economy mods instead, and many modpacks include their own money or trading system. On a crossplay server with Geyser, Bedrock players can use the commands and most chest shops; some menu shops look different on Bedrock. Crossplay between Java and Bedrock lists what changes for Bedrock players.
Questions from Minecraft server owners
How do I add money to my Minecraft server?
Install EssentialsX and VaultUnlocked from the Plugins tab on Paper and restart. Players get /balance and /pay once they have the permissions.
What is Vault for?
Vault is the bridge between the plugin that stores money and the plugins that use it, such as shops and auctions. Most shop plugins need it.
How do I give a player money?
Type eco give Sam 500 in the console. eco take, eco set and eco reset work the same way.
What is the best shop plugin for a survival server?
A chest shop plugin such as QuickShop-Hikari for player shops, plus one menu shop for items only the server sells. Use one menu shop, not several.
Why does my shop plugin say no economy was found?
Vault or VaultUnlocked is missing, or no economy plugin such as EssentialsX is installed. Add both and restart.
How do I stop players getting too rich?
Keep sell prices low for farmable items, sell prices below buy prices, and add ways to spend money, such as land claims or command costs.
