How to open a port on your Minecraft server
A Minecraft server listens on one port for players. Some plugins need a second one: Simple Voice Chat and Plasmo Voice send voice over UDP, BlueMap, Dynmap and squaremap serve a web map, Geyser lets Bedrock players in, and server lists read your player count through query.
Servers in Poland have a Ports tab for this, and every server we host stands in Warsaw, Poland. You open the port yourself, it is free, and traffic on it reaches only your server. This guide covers the tab step by step, the test, who may connect and what to do when a port stays closed.
In short
To open a port on your Minecraft server, click Ports in the menu of the control panel, then Add a port. Pick what it is for, such as Simple Voice Chat or a web page, and click Open port. The port gets its own number between 30001 and 30999 on your play address. Set your plugin to the server port the panel shows (or click Set it for me), restart the server once and press Test. Opening ports is free.
Where to open a port on your Minecraft server
- In your dashboard, click Open panel on the server.
- Click Ports in the menu on the left.
- The page lists the ports you have, with Add a port and a counter such as
2 of 10 ports.
Only the owner of the server sees the Ports tab. Team members you invited do not, whatever their permissions, so nobody else can open a way into your server.
Under the list, Other addresses of this server shows the address for Java players and, on a crossplay server, the Bedrock port. Those are already open; you do not add them here.
How to open a port for a plugin
- Click Add a port.
- Under What is it for?, pick the plugin: Simple Voice Chat, Plasmo Voice, Web page, Bedrock (Geyser), Server list query, RCON or Something else. The choice fills in the protocol for you.
- Give the port a Name you will recognise, such as
Voice chatorBlueMap. - Check the Protocol: TCP for connections like a web page or RCON, UDP for packets like voice chat, or TCP + UDP.
- Leave Port number on Auto, or click Choose and type a number between 30001 and 30999.
- Choose Who may connect and the Flood protection per address (both explained below).
- Click Open port. The panel confirms with
Port 30012 is open on your address. Your server uses port 25612 for it.
Each port has two numbers. The address is what players and websites use, for example survivalsmp.mc.cheapestminecrafthosting.com:30012. The server port is the number your plugin listens on inside the server. The panel shows both on the port, with a copy button next to the address.
A server can have 10 ports. A number you used before stays yours: when you add a port again later, it comes back first.
Set the plugin to the new port and restart
A new port shows a Next step box. The plugin has to listen on the server port, and the server has to restart once before the port works.
| What it is for | What the Next step box offers | Where the setting is |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Voice Chat | Set it for me | voicechat-server.properties: the port and the voice host, so players connect to the right address |
| Bedrock (Geyser) | Set it for me | Geyser config.yml: bedrock → port |
| Server list query | Set it for me | server.properties: enable-query=true and query.port |
| Plasmo Voice | Set in plugin | Plasmo Voice config.toml: [host] port |
| RCON | Set in plugin | server.properties: enable-rcon=true, rcon.port and rcon.password |
| Web page or something else | Set in plugin | The plugin's own config, for example the port of a BlueMap or Dynmap web server |
Set it for me writes the number into the file and keeps a copy of the old file next to it, ending in .voor-poort. The panel then says Saved in voicechat-server.properties. Restart the server to use it. The plugin has to have run once, so its settings file exists; if not, start the server with the plugin installed first.
For the others, open the file in the Files tab or over SFTP, set the server port the panel shows, save it and restart. Edit Minecraft server files shows how.
Players never type the server port. They use the address with the public number, or, for voice chat, nothing at all: the mod reads the voice host from the server.
Test whether the port is open
After the restart, click Test on the port. The panel checks it twice: From our network, straight to your server, and From the internet, through your play address like a player would.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
reachable from the internet through … | The port works from outside. |
your server accepts connections on port … | The plugin listens on the right server port. |
no reply, which is normal for most UDP programs | Voice chat and other UDP programs often stay silent to a test packet. Nothing refused it, so this is fine. |
the address works, but your server refused | The server runs, but nothing listens on the server port. Check the port in the plugin's config, then restart. |
no answer from your server in time | The server is off or still starting, or it has not been restarted since you added the port. |
For Bedrock (Geyser) and Server list query the test also checks the answer itself. The answer is what Server list query sends, so the plugin is running. means it is the right program.
Choose who may connect to the port
Everyone lets every address in, which is what voice chat, a web map and Geyser need. Only these addresses lets in a list of up to 20 IPv4 addresses or ranges, one per line. Add my address puts the address you are on into the list.
RCON only opens with a list. It is a full admin console behind one password, so the panel never opens it to everyone. Add the address of the computer or bot that uses it, and nothing else.
Flood protection per address limits how hard one address can hit the port:
- Network default: the limits our network already puts on every address.
- Strict: at most 300 UDP packets per second, 20 new TCP connections per minute and 8 TCP connections at once per address.
- Custom: set each of the three numbers yourself. Leave a field empty to keep the network default for it.
Turn a port off, change it or delete it
- Turn off closes the port at once and keeps its number. Turn on opens it again with the same number.
- Change edits the name, protocol, who may connect and the flood limit. The number stays the same.
- Delete removes the port for good. The number stays reserved for your server and comes back first for a next port.
- History lists every change on the page, with the time and whether it worked.
- Apply all ports again sets every port on our network and on the machine again, exactly as listed. Use it when a port that should work stays closed.
Traffic on a port reaches your server only through our network. Nobody can reach the server port directly, and other customers' ports never touch yours.
Common uses for an extra port
| Plugin or mod | Template | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Voice Chat | Simple Voice Chat | UDP |
| Plasmo Voice | Plasmo Voice | UDP |
| BlueMap, Dynmap, squaremap | Web page | TCP |
| Geyser on a second port | Bedrock (Geyser) | TCP + UDP |
| Server lists that show your player count | Server list query | UDP |
| Votifier or NuVotifier | Something else | TCP |
| A remote admin tool | RCON, with a list of addresses | TCP |
Crossplay servers already have a Bedrock port, shown under Other addresses of this server. You only need the Bedrock template for a second Geyser. Crossplay between Java and Bedrock covers the normal setup.
Questions from Minecraft server owners
Does opening a port on my Minecraft server cost extra?
No. The Ports tab is on servers in Poland, which is where every server we host stands, with up to 10 ports, and nothing is charged for it.
Why do I not see the Ports tab?
Only the owner of the server sees it, so team members you invited do not. The tab is on servers in Poland; on a server in another location, support opens the port for you for free.
Can I use port 25565 or a port number of my own?
Port 25565 is the play port, which every server already has. Extra ports get a number between 30001 and 30999 on your play address; with Choose you pick one in that range.
Why does my port still say no answer after I added it?
The server needs one restart after you add a port, and the plugin has to listen on the server port the panel shows. Check both, then click Test again.
Can my staff open ports?
No. Only the owner of the server sees the Ports tab. Team members you invited cannot open, change or delete ports.
Do my players need the port number for Simple Voice Chat?
No. After Set it for me and a restart, the voice chat mod on the player's side gets the address from the server and connects by itself.
