How to whitelist Bedrock players on a crossplay Minecraft server
On a crossplay server, Java and Bedrock players share one whitelist, but they do not get onto it the same way. Minecraft's own whitelist command only knows Java accounts, so a friend on a phone, a console or Windows needs a different route.
This guide explains why the usual command fails for Bedrock players, gives the three ways that work, and covers gamertags with spaces and how to check the list afterwards.
In short
Bedrock players go on the whitelist with a dot in front of their gamertag, for example .Steve, or with Floodgate's own command fwhitelist add Steve. The normal whitelist add Steve looks for a Java account, finds none and answers That player does not exist. On the Players tab of the panel, type the dot and the gamertag and the panel adds the right entry for you.
Why whitelist add says "That player does not exist"
whitelist add looks a name up among Java accounts. A Bedrock gamertag is not a Java username, so the lookup comes back empty and the server answers That player does not exist. A Bedrock player who tries to join anyway sees You are not white-listed on this server!.
Floodgate, the plugin that lets Bedrock players in, gives each of them a Java identity: the gamertag with a prefix in front, a dot by default, and a UUID made from their Xbox account number. The whitelist needs exactly that identity. For someone who is not online, only Floodgate or the panel can work it out.
Three ways to whitelist a Bedrock player
1. The Players tab
- Open the Players tab of your server.
- In the whitelist field, type a dot and then the gamertag, for example
.Steve. The hint under the field shows the prefix to use. - Click Add to whitelist. The panel looks up the Xbox account, writes the entry with the right UUID and reloads the whitelist.
2. fwhitelist in the console
fwhitelist add Steve
fwhitelist add "Big Steve"
fwhitelist remove SteveType these in the Console tab, or in game as an operator with a / in front. Floodgate looks the gamertag up online and adds the player with the right UUID. A name with a space goes between quotes, and a dot in front is fine: Floodgate removes it. The command is not available on a proxy, so on a network run it on the server that keeps the whitelist.
| Floodgate answers | What it means |
|---|---|
Steve has been added to the whitelist! | Done. Steve can join. |
Nothing has changed. Steve was already whitelisted | The player was already on the list. |
We were unable to find any existing account with the given username | A typo, or a brand new account. Check the spelling, or use the third way. |
The Global API is temporarily unavailable | Floodgate's lookup service is down for a moment. Try again later, or use the third way. |
The given username is too short or too long | The gamertag is not typed right. |
3. Let them join once
- Turn the whitelist off with
whitelist off. - Ask the Bedrock player to join.
- While they are online, run
whitelist add .Steve. The server now knows the player and stores the right UUID. - Turn the whitelist back on with
whitelist on.
Keep the gap short. While the whitelist is off, anyone who has the address can walk in.
Gamertags with spaces, and a different prefix
Floodgate replaces spaces with underscores by default, so the gamertag Big Steve joins as .Big_Steve. Use that version with whitelist add, and the original name between quotes with fwhitelist.
The dot is set by username-prefix in Floodgate's config.yml. If it was changed on your server, every Bedrock name starts with that prefix instead, in the whitelist and in commands such as op.
Check who is on the whitelist
whitelist list shows every name, Java and Bedrock together. In whitelist.json on the Files tab, Bedrock players are the entries whose UUID starts with 00000000-0000-0000-.
| In whitelist.json | Player |
|---|---|
A UUID like 3f2c9a1e-8b7d-4c55-9e21-6a0b4d7c1f88 | A Java player |
A UUID starting with 00000000-0000-0000- | A Bedrock player added through Floodgate |
To take a Bedrock player off the list, use fwhitelist remove with their gamertag. The rest of the whitelist, operators and bans works the same for everyone; see whitelist and operators.
Questions from Minecraft server owners
Why does whitelist add say That player does not exist for my Bedrock friend?
The command only looks up Java accounts. Add them with fwhitelist add and their gamertag, or on the Players tab with a dot before the name.
Do Bedrock players need a Java account to join a whitelisted server?
No. Floodgate lets them in with their Microsoft account. They only need to be on the whitelist.
Should I type the dot with fwhitelist?
It makes no difference. Floodgate removes it, so fwhitelist add Steve and fwhitelist add .Steve do the same.
Does this work for players on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch?
Yes. Console players are Bedrock players. Add them by gamertag in the same way.
What if fwhitelist cannot find the account?
Check the spelling first. If the account is new or the lookup service is down, turn the whitelist off, let the player join once and add them while they are online.
