Troubleshooting
Fix "Failed to verify username" on a Minecraft server
When a player joins a Minecraft Java server with online mode on, the game and the server both talk to the Minecraft login service. The game says "I am signed in as Steve", and the server checks that claim. If the check fails, the server refuses the player with "Failed to verify username!"
The fix depends on whether one player or everyone gets the message. Work through the steps below in order.
In short
"Failed to verify username" means the server asked the Minecraft login service whether the player really signed in with that account, and the answer was no. Most of the time the player's session has expired: closing the game and the Minecraft Launcher, signing in again and rejoining fixes it. If every player gets it at once, the login service has a problem or a server setting such as Block proxy connections or the network forwarding is wrong. Do not turn off online mode to get around it.
Why Minecraft says "Failed to verify username"
| Cause | Who gets it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The player's session expired | One player | Restart the game and the launcher |
| The game was started from an unofficial launcher without a real account | One player | Sign in with a Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java |
| The player uses a VPN while Block proxy connections is on | One or a few players | Turn off the VPN, or turn off Block proxy connections |
| The Minecraft login service has an outage | Everyone, on many servers | Wait; nothing to change on your server |
| Network proxy forwarding is wrong | Everyone on a network | Rebuild the network in the panel |
In the Console you see the refused join as a line like Username 'Steve' tried to join with an invalid session. That tells you the server did the check and the service said no.
Fixes for the player, in order
- Close Minecraft completely, and close the Minecraft Launcher too.
- Open the launcher again. If it asks you to sign in, do so with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Start the game and join again.
- Still refused? In the launcher, sign out of the account, sign in again and try once more.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy program and try again.
- Check that you can join another online server. If you cannot join any, the problem is with your account or the login service, not with this server.
A game that stayed open for many hours, or a computer that came back from sleep, often has a stale session. Restarting the launcher gets a fresh one.
The game can show its own version of this problem before the server is even reached: Failed to log in: Invalid session (Try restarting your game and the launcher). The fix is the same: restart both.
When every player gets "Failed to verify username"
When all players are refused at the same time, the cause is almost never their accounts. Check these in order:
- Look at the Console when someone tries to join.
Authentication servers are down. Please try again later, sorry!means the server could not reach the login service at all. - Ask a player to try another well-known online server. If that fails too, the login service has an outage. It is usually fixed within the hour, and there is nothing to change on your side.
- If other servers work and yours does not, check Block proxy connections and, on a network, the forwarding setup, both below.
During an outage, players who were already online can usually keep playing. Only new joins are refused.
Block proxy connections and VPN users
The Block proxy connections setting in Settings, under Access, is prevent-proxy-connections in server.properties. With it on, the server also sends the player's network address to the login service. When the address the server sees is not the address the player signed in from, the service says no, and the player gets "Failed to verify username".
- A player on a VPN, or on a network that switches addresses, is refused.
- If many players are refused after you turned it on, turn it off, press Save changes and restart.
Block proxy connections is off by default. For a whitelisted server it adds little; whitelist and operators keeps strangers out more reliably.
Failed to verify username on a Velocity network
On a server network, the Velocity proxy checks the account, not the servers behind it. It then passes the verified player on to each server with a shared secret. For that to work:
| Where | Setting the panel writes | What breaks it |
|---|---|---|
Each server's server.properties | online-mode=false | Setting online mode back on at that server |
Each server's config/paper-global.yml | The Velocity section under proxies switched on, with the proxy's secret | Replacing or editing that file |
| The proxy | Online mode on, modern forwarding | This is managed by the panel |
When players are refused only on a network, the forwarding on one of the servers usually no longer matches the proxy. In Settings, click Take the network apart on the Network card, then pick the servers again under Server network and click Build the network. The panel writes the settings fresh.
Vanilla servers cannot use modern forwarding, and Fabric needs an extra mod for it. The panel builds networks from Paper and Purpur servers.
Why you should not turn off online mode
Turning off Verify accounts with Mojang, which is online-mode=false, makes the message go away, because the server stops checking. It also opens the server to anyone:
| With online mode off | What it means |
|---|---|
| Anyone can join under any name | A stranger can log in as you and get your operator rights |
| The whitelist checks names only | Knowing a whitelisted name is enough to get in |
| Player data is keyed to offline IDs | Inventories and positions do not carry over when you switch back |
| Skins do not load | Everyone sees default skins |
The panel warns about this next to the switch. The only safe use of online mode off is behind a proxy that checks accounts itself, as on a network the panel built. For other ways to keep your server safe, see stop griefing.
Other login messages that look similar
| Message | What it means | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
Multiplayer is disabled | Account or parental settings block online play | Can't connect |
You are not white-listed on this server! | The player is not on the whitelist | Whitelist and operators |
Unable to verify player details | Velocity forwarding secret does not match | Rebuild the network |
Incompatible client! Please use and a version | Different Minecraft versions | Change the server version |
Questions from Minecraft server owners
How do I fix Failed to verify username in Minecraft?
Close the game and the Minecraft Launcher, open the launcher, sign in again and rejoin. If everyone gets it, check the console and whether other servers work.
Is Failed to verify username a problem with my server?
Usually not. It is most often an expired session on the player's side or a short outage of the login service. A server setting is the cause only when every player is refused.
Should I set online-mode to false to fix it?
No. That lets anyone join under any name, including yours. Only turn it off behind a proxy that checks accounts, such as a network built in the panel.
Can a VPN cause Failed to verify username?
Yes, when the server has Block proxy connections on. Turn off the VPN, or turn off that setting in the Access group of the Settings tab.
Can players with a cracked launcher join my server?
Not with online mode on, and it should stay on. Every player needs a real Minecraft Java account.
Do Bedrock players get Failed to verify username?
No, Bedrock players sign in with their Microsoft account through Geyser and Floodgate on a crossplay server. Their login problems have other messages.
