Run multiple worlds on one Minecraft server with Multiverse

A normal Minecraft server has one world with its Nether and End. Multiverse adds as many extra worlds as you like on the same server: a creative build world, a resource world that you reset every month, a lobby, or an old map kept for memories.

Players move between worlds with a command or a portal, and each world can have its own rules. This guide uses the commands of Multiverse-Core 5, the current version.

In short

Install Multiverse-Core from the Plugins tab on a Paper or Purpur server and restart. Then /mv create creative normal makes a new world, /mv import oldworld normal adds a world folder you uploaded, and /mv tp creative takes you there. Each world keeps its own gamemode, difficulty and PvP setting in plugins/Multiverse-Core/worlds.yml. Every loaded world with players in it adds to the memory the server uses.

Install Multiverse-Core on a Paper server

  1. Check that the server runs Paper or Purpur in Settings. Multiverse is a plugin and does not run on Fabric or Forge.
  2. Open the Plugins tab and search the Plugin catalog for Multiverse-Core. Install it.
  3. Restart the server.
  4. Type mv list in the Console. It lists the worlds Multiverse knows: your normal world, Nether and End.

Commands in the console go without the slash; in the game, type them with a slash as an operator. Other staff need the matching multiverse. permissions, which you give with LuckPerms.

Create a new world with /mv create

mv create creative normal
mv create mining normal -s 12345
mv create builds normal --world-type flat --no-structures
mv create arena_nether nether
PartWhat it means
creativeThe name of the world, which is also the folder name
normal, nether or the_endThe kind of world
-s 12345A seed, for a world with known terrain
--world-type flatA flat world; other types are normal, amplified and large_biomes
--no-structuresNo villages, temples or other structures
-g VoidGenA world generator from another plugin, such as VoidGen for an empty world

Use short names without spaces. The world appears as a new folder next to world in the Files tab.

Import an existing world folder

To add a world you already have, such as an old map or a downloaded map:

  1. Upload the world folder to the top folder of the server in the Files tab. The folder must contain level.dat directly, not inside another folder.
  2. Type mv import oldmap normal, with the folder name and the kind of world.
  3. Type mv tp oldmap to check it.

A world from an older Minecraft version is upgraded when it loads. Keep a copy first. Move your world to our server covers uploading large world folders.

Teleport between worlds

CommandWhat it does
/mv tp creativeTakes you to the spawn of the world called creative
/mv tp Sam creativeSends Sam there
/mv spawnTakes you to the spawn of the world you are in
/mv setspawnSets the spawn of the current world to where you stand
/mv listLists all worlds
/mv info creativeShows the settings of a world

Players without staff rights usually travel with portals or with warps from a plugin such as EssentialsX, so they cannot pick any world they like.

Gamemode, PvP and difficulty per world

Multiverse keeps the settings of every world in plugins/Multiverse-Core/worlds.yml. Each world has a section with lines such as these:

creative:
  difficulty: peaceful
  gamemode: creative
  pvp: false
  allow-flight: true
  hunger: false
  auto-load: true
  1. Open plugins/Multiverse-Core/worlds.yml in the Files tab.
  2. Change the lines under the world's name.
  3. Save, then type mv reload in the Console, or restart the server.

/mv modify changes the same values in the game; /mv help modify shows its exact form. Players switch to the world's gamemode when they enter it, unless they have the permission to keep their own.

On Minecraft 1.21.11 and newer, PvP is also a game rule. Multiverse can set game rules per world, such as mv gamerule set minecraft:pvp false creative.

Delete, remove or unload a world

CommandWhat happens to the world
mv unload miningStops loading it; files and settings stay, mv load mining brings it back
mv remove miningMultiverse forgets it; the folder stays in the Files tab
mv delete miningDeletes the world folder for good, after you confirm

mv delete asks you to type mv confirm with a code it shows. Make a backup in the Backups tab before deleting a world anyone has built in. A monthly resource world is the usual case: delete it and create it again with the same name.

Multiverse-Portals, Multiverse-NetherPortals and Multiverse-Inventories

Add-onWhat it does
Multiverse-PortalsPortals you build and link to a world or a spot, so players walk between worlds
Multiverse-NetherPortalsLinks each world to its own Nether and End, so a Nether portal in creative leads to a creative Nether
Multiverse-InventoriesSeparate inventories, health and experience per world or per group of worlds
Multiverse-SignPortalsSigns that act as portals

All four are in the Plugin catalog. Install the same major version as Multiverse-Core. Multiverse-Inventories matters as soon as you have a creative world: without it, players carry creative items into survival.

How much RAM extra worlds use

A world costs memory for the chunks that are loaded in it. A world with nobody in it keeps few or no chunks loaded and costs little. A world with players costs about as much per player as your main world.

  • Ten players spread over three worlds use more memory than ten players in one world, because they share fewer chunks.
  • Set auto-load: false in worlds.yml for worlds you rarely use, and load them with mv load when needed.
  • Big pre-generated worlds take up storage. They use memory once players walk in them.

Count the memory you need with how much RAM a Minecraft server needs. When the worlds should run separately, with their own plugins and restarts, a server network is the better fit.

Questions from Minecraft server owners

How do I add a second world to my Minecraft server?

Install Multiverse-Core on Paper or Purpur, restart, and type mv create name normal. Go there with mv tp name.

How do I import a world into Multiverse?

Upload the folder with level.dat in it to the top folder of the server, then type mv import foldername normal.

Can each world have a different gamemode?

Yes. Set gamemode for that world in plugins/Multiverse-Core/worlds.yml and run mv reload, or use /mv modify.

How do I keep inventories separate between worlds?

Install Multiverse-Inventories and put the worlds that should share items in one group. Creative and survival should be in different groups.

Does Multiverse work on Fabric or Forge?

No. It is a plugin for Paper, Purpur and Spigot. Modded servers need a mod for extra worlds.

Do extra worlds slow down my server?

Only when they are loaded with players in them. Unload worlds nobody uses, and pre-generate the ones players explore.
