Add a Discord bot to your Minecraft server

The control panel has its own Discord bot for your Minecraft server. Members of your Discord type a slash command and get the status of the server, the players online, the play address or a summary of the last seven days. Admins can restart the server from Discord.

You connect the bot with a one-time code from the Settings tab. This guide covers the setup, each command, who may restart and the replies the bot can give. For Minecraft chat in a Discord channel, use a chat bridge as described in link your chat to Discord.

In short

To add a Discord bot to your Minecraft server, open the Settings tab of the control panel, click Connect Discord bot on the Discord commands card and add the bot to your Discord. Click Make a link code and type /link with that code in your Discord within 30 minutes. Your members can then use /status, /players, /address and /stats, and members with Manage Server can use /restart.

What the Minecraft server Discord bot can do

The bot adds six slash commands to your Discord. You use /link once to connect it. The other five work from then on.

CommandWhat the reply showsWho can use it
/linkConnects this Discord to your server with a code from the panelMembers with Manage Server
/statusRunning or not, time since the last start, play address, memory, processor and disk useEveryone
/playersHow many players are online out of the slots, with their namesEveryone
/addressThe play address for Java, and for Bedrock when the server has crossplayEveryone
/statsUptime share, players, processor and memory over the last seven daysEveryone
/restartRestarts the server and names the member who did itMembers with Manage Server, or one role you choose

Everyone means every member who can use commands in that Discord. They need no account with us and no access to the panel.

A command always works on the server that is linked to the Discord it is typed in. Nobody types a server name or ID, so a member cannot reach another server by guessing one.

How to add the Discord bot to your Minecraft server

You need the Manage Server permission in the Discord you want to use. Discord asks for it to add a bot, and /link checks it as well.

  1. Open your server in the control panel and go to the Settings tab.
  2. Find the Discord commands card, below Discord notifications.
  3. Click Connect Discord bot. Discord opens in a new tab.
  4. Choose your Discord server in the list and confirm. The bot now shows in the member list of your Discord.
  5. Go back to the panel and click Make a link code. The code shows under Your link code.
  6. In any channel of your Discord, type /link and enter the code in the code field, for example /link code:K7MPQ3XR.
  7. The bot replies with Connected to and the name of your server. Reload the Settings tab: the card now shows connected and the name of your Discord.

Staff you invited to the panel see this card only with the Settings permission. Give someone access to your server explains each permission.

Who can restart the Minecraft server from Discord

/restart is the only command that changes something on the server, so it has a check of its own. Two groups of members may use it:

  • Members with Manage Server in your Discord. Discord also gives that permission to the owner of the Discord and to every role with Administrator.
  • Members with the one role you enter on the Discord commands card.

Let one Discord role restart the Minecraft server

  1. In Discord, open User Settings, then Advanced, and switch on Developer Mode.
  2. Open Server Settings, then Roles. Right click the role and choose Copy Role ID.
  3. In the panel, paste the number in Role that may restart (optional) on the Discord commands card.
  4. Click Save.

The field takes a role ID of 17 to 20 digits. A role name gives an error. To take the right away again, empty the field and click Save. The field only shows once a Discord is connected.

For restarts at fixed times, such as every night, use scheduled restarts instead of a command.

What /status, /players and /address show in Discord

/status

FieldWhat it shows
StatusRunning, or the current state such as offline or starting
Up forTime since the last start, in days and hours or hours and minutes
AddressThe play address of the server
MemoryMemory in use out of the memory limit of the server, in MB
ProcessorProcessor use out of the processor limit of the server, in percent
DiskStorage in use out of the storage limit of the server, in GB

/players

The bot asks the server for its player count the same way the multiplayer list in Minecraft Java does, at the moment the command is typed. The reply shows how many players are online out of the slots, the names, and the version the server reports.

  • Minecraft shares a limited sample of names, so on a busy server the count can be higher than the list.
  • Players who switched off Allow Server Listings in their Minecraft options show as Anonymous Player.
  • With hide-online-players=true the reply gives the count and says the server does not share the names. Server properties explained lists that setting.

/address

The reply gives the Java address, ready to copy. When the server has crossplay, a second line shows the Bedrock address and its port. New players find how to use it in join your Minecraft server.

Seven days of Minecraft server stats in Discord with /stats

We record the figures of each server once every five minutes and keep them for 30 days. /stats sums up the last seven days of those measurements.

FieldWhat it means
OnlineShare of the measurements in which the server was up. Time it was stopped, also by you, counts as offline.
MeasurementsHow many measurements the figures are based on. A full week is 2,016.
Players averageAverage player count over the week
Players peakHighest player count in one measurement
Processor averageAverage processor use, in percent
Memory averageAverage memory use, in MB

On a server without measurements yet, the bot replies that there are none for the past week. The week fills in as the measurements come in. For player counts per hour of the day, see when your players are online.

Limit the Discord bot to some channels or roles

To limit who can use the commands, or in which channels, use the command settings of Discord itself:

  1. Open Server Settings and then Integrations.
  2. Open the bot in the list of bots and apps.
  3. Choose which roles, members and channels may use its commands, for all commands at once or for each command.

A common setup keeps /status, /players and /address open in a public channel and allows /restart only in a staff channel. The check on /restart described above still applies on top of these Discord settings.

Slash commands of the bot missing in Discord? Check the Integrations settings from the section above. A role or channel without access does not see the commands.

Disconnect the Discord bot or move it to another Discord

  1. On the Discord commands card, click Disconnect.
  2. Confirm with Disconnect in the window Disconnect this Discord?

The bot itself stays a member of your Discord. Kick it there if you want it gone.

To use the bot in another Discord, disconnect first. Make a link code only shows while no Discord is linked. Then add the bot to the new Discord and link it with a fresh code.

If you removed the bot from your Discord without clicking Disconnect, add it again with Connect Discord bot. The server is still linked to that Discord, so the commands work again without a new code.

Discord bot and Discord notifications on one Minecraft server

The Settings tab has two Discord cards, and you switch them on separately:

  • Discord notifications posts messages by itself through a webhook in a channel you choose, for example when the server crashes or comes back.
  • Discord commands answers only when a member types a command.

Disconnecting the bot leaves your notification webhook and the events you ticked as they are. Link your chat to Discord explains the notifications and the chat bridge.

Questions from Minecraft server owners

Do I need my own Discord bot token for the Minecraft server bot?

No. The panel uses our bot, which you add with the invite on the Discord commands card. You only create a bot with your own token for a chat bridge such as DiscordSRV.

Can the Discord bot show Minecraft chat in a channel?

No. Its commands cover status, players, the address, stats and restarts. Chat between Minecraft and Discord needs a plugin or mod on the server, such as DiscordSRV on Paper.

Can I start or stop my Minecraft server from Discord?

The bot has /restart only. Start and stop the server with the power buttons in the control panel.

Can I link one Discord to two Minecraft servers?

Link each server to its own Discord. When two servers are linked to the same Discord, the commands answer for only one of them and you cannot choose which.

Does the Discord bot need a plugin or mod on my Minecraft server?

No. The bot reads the control panel and the server list ping, so it works the same on Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and modpacks.

Which Discord permissions does the bot ask for?

None. The invite asks Discord for no extra permissions, and the bot answers through slash commands only.

Does the Discord bot work when the Minecraft server is stopped?

Yes for /status, /address and /stats. /players asks the running server itself, so it needs the server to be on.
